Gathering the Brown Ajah (Get in here Ladies!!)

05 September 2002 (10:34 am CST)

Glaring at the fidgeting novice, Raeyn Sedai finished writing out the last of her invites, sanded and sealed it. Handing the large stack to the young girl, “Find every member of the Brown Ajah that is in the Tower, and give them the invitation with their name on it. If you are unable to find that sister, then leave it for them in their chambers. Either way, you need to get these all distributed in the next hour or two… well, move girl!”

Shooing the novice out of the room and closing the door behind her, Raeyn wandered back over to her desk and sat down. She picked up the bit of scrap on which she had first jumbled together the note :

All Brown Sisters are to meet in the back room of the Library on this evening after Supper for a meeting of great importance to our Ajah. It is in your best interest to attend.

Short, but simple, with no word that could be leaked via some overzealous novice carrying the notes. Crumpling up the scrap, she dropped it in her wastebasket and started on her work for the day… the day would go by quickly regardless.

The knock on the door sounded ominous to Poluna as she sat at her desk pouring over yet more information on the Aes Sedai of the past. She had just finished reading a riveting passage on Shein Chunla, an Aes Sedai who was raised from the Green Ajah.

“You have to hand it to them,” Poluna mused to herself, “The Greens certainly like to be remembered for strange and unusual things. Oh … right, the door.” Like most Aes Sedai who took the shawl of the Brown Ajah, Luna was sometimes scatterbrained, or at least not always on top of everything that was going on around her. Ask her about a fact from a book that she was reading, and chances were, she could quote passage to you.

Poluna rose from her seat and went to the door. Upon opening the door she found a novice standing at the door, with her hand raised, as if to knock again.

“Well?” Luna asked the novice. “What are you doing knocking on my door in the middle of the night?”

“Umm… It’s n-n-not the middle of the n-n-night Poluna Sedai. It’s just before dinner time.” The novice managed to stutter out.

“Oh,” Poluna looked out her window at the dusky sky, “so you’re right.” She looked at the novice again. “Don’t just stand there girl, what are you doing?”

“A note. Raeyn Sedai sent me to give you this note.” The novice said shoving a note with the words Poluna Sedai scrawled on the front of the envelope.

Taking the envelope from the novice’s hands, Poluna nodded and then opened the note.

All Brown Sisters are to meet in the back room of the Library on this evening after Supper for a meeting of great importance to our Ajah. It is in your best interest to attend.

“Oh… Yes… I see. But of course.” She looked up. “Well, what are you still standing there for? I’m sure you have a lot to do. Shoo!”

The novice jumped and turned around and practically ran away. “Pish tosh.” Luna muttered. “Novices these days. So jumpy.” She remarked, seemingly forgetting that she acted the same way when she was a novice.

Arette was just having her secret little break from the day’s work and eating the chocolate she had saved. She had melted browness of her fingers and she knew her lips were in chocolate too. Sometimes she thought she was cursed. Everytime she ate something fast, she managed to dirty herself. She was so concentrated on the heavenly taste that she squeaked in most un-Aes Sedai fashion when she heard someone clearing her throat on the doorway of her office. She jump to her licking her lips and saw a wide-eyed novice with a note. “What is it child?”, she asked a little bit hotness in her voice. The novice curtsied quickly so low that her head was nearly touching the floor and told her that she had a note from Raeyn Sedai for her. Arette thanked her and dismissed her. She opened the note and was happy to see that she was also invited to the meeting. She cursed when she noticed the chocolate stains on the letter and went to wash her hands wondering what Raeyn was up to.

***
Right after the supper, Arette knocked to the door and heard “Enter” in Raeyn’s recognizible voice. She smiled warmly at her and Poluna who was back in the Tower after traveling so long in the world. “It is good to see you sisters. I feel that I’m so busy these days that I don’t have more than a couple of minutes for myself in a day not to mention to spend with my sisters.” She sighed and wished she didn’t sound like she was whining. She sat beside Poluna and asked her and Raeyn how they were.

Mellyn had been in the middle of a busy day. Novices seemed to have a habit of all getting into trouble at once, so for the past few hours she’d had a steady stream in and out of her office. Another knock came to her door, and with a sigh, Mellyn called for the person to come in the door. Another Novice. Already thinking of punishments in her mind, she said “Yes, Child? Why have you been sent to me?”

The girl, slight dread on her face, seemed to stutter slightly, holding something out towards Mellyn. Impatience seething through her mind, she took the note and scanned it. A meeting of the Brown Ajah was scheduled for later today, it seemed. She would be there of course. She dismissed the girl hurredly, and got back to her business.
—————————————————

That evening, Mellyn made her way quickly to the room where the meeting was scheduled. Opening the door, she found she found a few of the Sisters there already, as well as the Keeper and the Head. She greeted everyone before sitting and istening to the words surrounding her. She felt the need to relax before the meeting began, and had had no opportunity for that earlier in the day.

Raeyn greeted her sisters warmly as they began to arrive to their little Brownie hideaway in the library. She had come up during dinnertime and had set up some chocolate snacks of various types, some tea, coffee, and of course, hot chocolate. With so many of the Brown sisters in important posiitons around the Tower, chocolate therapy would be a MUST before any meeting whatsoever could be started.

Tapping on the table, she gathered everyone’s attention, “My Sisters, we shall start the meeting in a few minutes, just in case there is anyone that is running a little late. Enjoy some chocolate for the moment.”

Raising her hand to knock almost timidly on the door, Karana put it down and smoothed her dress over her hips. How often had she called these meetings? How strange, after centuries, to not be in charge of the Brown Ajah any longer.

How unbearable to feel she had to knock on these, of all, doors… Instead, she grasped the handle and glided through, the picture of composure and graciousness. She inclined her head as the Sisters stood up and curtsied to her, and though her heart ached with love for these women, she acknowledged them in the way that sadly separated them all.

“Greetings, Daughters. I hear there are plans to be made that could affect the entire knowledge base of the White Tower for centuries to come.” She grinned conspiratorially at them. “I felt I could crash your party, even though I wasn’t actually invited.”

A knock on the door, followed shortly thereafter by the figure of Karana Sedai, the now Amyrlin Seat, was almost enough to cause Raeyn to jump out of her seat. She was quite pleased to see her former Ajah head, and now Mother here, but still!

“Greetings, Daughters. I hear there are plans to be made that could affect the entire knowledge base of the White Tower for centuries to come.” She grinned conspiratorially at them. “I felt I could crash your party, even though I wasn’t actually invited.”

Taking Karana’s hand and kissing her ring in midcursty, Raeyn peered up with a smile, “Glad that you have the time to crash the party, Mother. As proud as we are of your ascension to the Amyrlin Seat, we still miss you terribly in this parts. Please, take a seat.. refreshments? We should be starting shortly.”

Reaching her quarters after spending the day with Dal and Mashi, Terra was tired. She noticed a letter sticking out from her door. It was labled with her name on it so the Brown sister pried it open and quickly read the note. She bolted to the library not taking any notice of the various people that looked at her in the oddest fashion.

She reached the library and all the other Sisters turned and looked her way. She curtsied to Mother and the Keeper and tried to sit down as unobtrusivley as possible. It didn’t really work being as she tripped on her own feet and fell on her face. None of the Sisters really laughed but she thought she heard a few coughs and some people hid their mouths with their hands. Terra smiled at them and sat down wondering why they were all here.

Seeing as everyone was present and seated, Raeyn Sedai moved to the front of the room and clapped to get everyone’s attention.

“Today sisters, I have gathered you to resubmit an idea that was lost and obscured for a number of years, but I feel that now is the time to bring it back up for discussion. This would be the Brown Ajah’s Research Facility that, I hope, we have all wanted and wondered about. Basically, I wanted to use this meeting as a discussion forum, so that we may gather together ideas for submittance to our Amyrlin Seat, currently present.” Raeyn smiled at Karana Sedai and made a slight bow before continuing, “I will now open up the floor to all present for suggestions and ideas, in hopes that all our minds together can better help craft our mutual dream.”

Raeyn flashed a glance around the room, then sat down in the chair she had pulled a bit aside from the rest of the group next to the door. Smoothing her skirts across her lap, she stilled her hands and waited for the first sister to speak.

After everyone had arrived, and Luna had munched on her fair share of chocolate goodies, Raeyn began to speak, “Today sisters, I have gathered you to resubmit an idea that was lost and obscured for a number of years, but I feel that now is the time to bring it back up for discussion. This would be the Brown Ajah’s Research Facility that, I hope, we have all wanted and wondered about. After Raeyn had sat down, Luna quickly gulped the morsel of food that was in her mouth and stood up.

“Mother, Keeper and fellow Brown Ajah, I do have some great ideas regarding this tower. After Raeyn and I first spoke of this again, after my long stay away from you guys, which by the way I enjoyed, but I wish that I hadn’t left because of the reasons that I did, I was thoroughly excited. I have been looking forward to beginning this venture. The things that we’ll learn and the new people that we will be able to speak with, will make this experience phenomenal.” She took a deep breath, barely containing the excitement that bubbled up inside of her. The opportunity to learn and study new weaves, building, and, well, everything, created in her a drive and a bubbling that rarely showed itself. Learning excited Poluna, one of the many reasons that she chose this Ajah. A love of books and reading was not everything, one had to ENJOY the hard work that came with studying and with learning things that, in some cases, one had no teacher to explain and guide one through.

“Now, I do have some ideas on what we could do. I’ve always wanted to see what we may be able to do in terms of agriculture. The population is getting larger, and it would be best to learn new forms of crop production before our populations explode much more. A second idea, which I’m sure would be popular with at least one other Ajah, besides our own, is Medical Research. The interaction with another Ajah might do our project good. The chances of it being accepted are greater if there is more than one Ajah involved.” Luna wrung her hands. She had more ideas, but she felt that she should allow others to share their thoughts and dreams on what they could learn. Nodding to her Sisters and to the Amyrlin Seat, she sat down on her chair and waited.

Karana had meant to only listen, but she had been a Brown Aes Sedai for 250 more years than she had been the Amyrlin, and well, old habits died hard. What a coup it would be for her to go down in history as the Amyrlin (Raised from the Brown) who had started the grand and glorious Research Facility.

“Long I dreamed of this Research Facility, but the time was never right. Right or not, now is the time. There are so many things we can study, that my mind fairly boggles. I know a subject dear to Arette’s heart that I am sure she will introduce, and probably you all know what I would do, had I the time.”

“I spent nearly my entire life working with ter’angreals. I have some Talent with them and have recovered many for the Tower, and more importantly, I have discovered the uses of many of them. Many, many times I felt like I was so close to understanding their secret, to figuring out how they worked, not just how to use, but how, in fact, to make them.” She sighed and frustration crossed her face fleetingly.

“Had I but another 300 years to study them, maybe I could figure out how to make them. In place of that, maybe, just maybe, I can spend some time in the Facility under the guise of inspecting it and do some research as I can. My desire for what should be done in the Research Facility is the study of ter’angreals.”

13 September 2002 (5:34am CST)

Arette listened with keen interest what her fellow sisters were suggesting. Bright smile lit her face when she heard Karana mentioning her special interest. She had dabbled with a bit of everything, but her special knowledge areas were the Prophecies and astronomy. She listened with wonder how Karana told that she had been close to recovering the secret of ter’angreal making. She would have to ask if she had time someday to tell Kit about it. Arette still felt a bit exhausted when she remembered the day she had shown her mentee the ter’angreal storage room. Kit had become obsessed with the subject since and asked her everytime they met something about them.
After Karana had sat down, she stood and said smiling “I would like to suggest that we base an observatorium. I know that the night sky has been mapped couple of times, but there is one flaw in them. I have read journals of the sailors – such an wonderful language they use – and noticed that the stars change when you go south. I have never seen a map of southern stars those.” She blushed slightly when she realized that she had been rambling, the Tower was so north that such a study was impossible from their observatory. “Ermh…this project would also give us a chance to study the Atha’an Miere more since they are the masters of the seas and usually navigate by stars. But the most interesting area of study is how to combine the Prophecies and astronomy. “Twice dawns the day when his blood is shed.
Once for mourning, once for birth”, she recited. “I believe that this means solar eclipse. If we could predict them, we could also predict the Tarmon Gai’don.” Naturally she didn’t add that they were in a hurry already. The Dragon Reborn was a man and trollocs had been seen south where they hadn’t been since the Trolloc Wars. Wishing that her face didn’t show anything of ger thoughts, she sat down. “Well, that’s all I have to say sisters.”

Leaning back in her chair, Eniara mulled over the possibilites the research facility could have. There were so many things that could be preserved and done…and this project was so long in the works. Smiling, she rose to her feet to speak.

“I think this project is a wonderful thing and a long time in coming, and I know you all have wonderful ideas for what we can do with it. However, I while it is not exactly research, I would like to put in my idea that a ancient documents preservation area be built. Currently, stored away in the library are countless fragments of ancient texts that have been stored away…some haven’t been touched in several hundred years. Because there is so much material in the library, it is unfeasable to try and sort and piece together these documents. I think it would be wonderful to have a place to take these relics to categorize and sort and try to preserve and repair them. We do not fully know how much of a treasure we have in the basements and we have no way to find out just how great it is in the current situation.”

Nodding to the Amyrlin and Raeyn, Eni retook her seat.

Humming with excitement, Raeyn stood up, barely containing her pride and happiness with her Ajah’s suggestions. Clasping her hands to her together in front of her, she let herself smile broadly at those gathered, “I’m impressed, sisters. All that you have suggested thusfar sounds excellent, but of course, I am interested in seeing if anyone else has anything to suggest before we go our ways for the evening.”

Crossing the floor, she poured herself another cup of hot chocolate and leaned against the wall… she couldn’t stand to sit any longer.

Grabbing a piece of parchemnt, Raeyn began writing down all the things her sisters had mentioned thusfar in their meeting.

“Lets see here” she mused to herself as she began writing, “Poluna suggested agricultural and medical research, The Amyrlin mentioned ter’angrael research, Arette mentioned building an observatory, Eniara suggested more storage space and such for document preservation. Was there anything else that anyone would like to add to this before we begin figuring out the how of it all?”

Nodding in reply to Poluna’s suggestion, Raeyn added it to the list, Wiping a smudge of ink across her nose, she replied, “Not quite Luna.. as flowers is horticulture, and food is agriculture. Perhaps a separate greenhouse for..” she trailed off as she dashed a few quick lines across the page. Looking back up from the parchment, Raeyn glanced around the room, “Anything else from anyone?”

26 September 2002 (4:01am CST)

Arette was listening what everyone said while she was trying to come up with more ideas. The medical research made her think. They would naturally be co-operating with the Yellows in that area. But the more Ajahs were involved, the easier the whole idea would be accepted. They would need new buildings after all and the money didn’t grow in trees. Greens and Reds worked mostly with weaves and Greys and Blues with politics. Maybe they could devote more time to Prophecies studies and combine the lore Greens and Reds had, but to study Daes Dae’mar you had to leave the Tower. Remembering the Hall meetings, she cancelled that thought too. But then there were only Whites left, the most prominent philosophers of the world. That sparked something. She didn’t remember reading much new philosophical texts that weren’t written by them. Maybe it was because to be a philosopher, you needed to do it all day long and it didn’t bring much bread to table. They could become patrons for people who wanted to become philosophers. And maybe there already were people who were studying these things but who lacked funds. So far she hadn’t heard any idea besides ter’angreals that had to do with the One Power or that was somehow secret. Normal people could help them. Raeyn was about to continue when she decided to present the idea. “Sisters, will this research be merely for Aes Sedai? I’m sure that we could find interested people who have studied these areas before to help us and bring more knowledge with them. I can think of one area of study in the world where the White Tower has monopoly and it is philosophy. Maybe we could start supporting people who want to become one. Besides this way we would get the Whites interested of the project and we would have at least two Ajahs, White and Yellow, on our side when it is decided that is this idea worth the amount of money we would have to put into it.”

Verina had taken the message from the novice, who had interrupted her. She opened the seal and read the contents:

“All Brown Sisters are to meet in the back room of the Library on this evening after Supper for a meeting of great importance to our Ajah. It is in your best interest to attend”

She looked at the candle and knew she had plenty of time, until the meeting and so carried on re-writing the translation she was working on.

As she neared the end of the chapter, she casually looked at the candle and suddenly worked out why it had gone quite dark.

“Oh light, late again”, Verina grabbed her shawl and pushed her glasses into her hair.

“Late as usual, I don’t know why they don’t remind me and send a novice to get me when it’s time!”

She reached the library in time to hear Karana finish speaking. Strange that the ‘ex’ head of the Browns was here.

She pushed open the door and tried to sneak in the back.

Arching an eyebrow as Verina made her way to the back, Raeyn looked around the room. The sisters were still in avid discussion of the facility, so Raeyn casually made her way to the back.

“Is everything okay, Verina? Glad that you made it regardless, but next meeting…” she let it trail off, but ruined it with a small smile, “Now, come, join into the discussion. We’re pretty much to the point of wrapping it all up for the evening, but I still would like to hear what you would suggest.”
